TMJ Symptoms And How You Can Make Sure If You Have It Or Not

by Kevin Bates

Temporomandibular joint disease is a condition wherein the joint that is responsible for connecting the skull to the jaw becomes inflamed. It causes difficulty in opening the mouth and moving the jaw. Moving the jaw is often accompanied by pain. It also causes headaches, nausea and sometimes, infection of the mouth.

A variety of treatments are available to patients. If diagnosed early, it can be treated with simple jaw exercises and the wearing of a nighttime biofeedback headband. If the condition becomes too severe though, it will need long term treatment and sometimes, patients need to go under the knife in order for the malfunction to be corrected. The importance of an early diagnosis cannot be stressed enough as it will determine what kind of treatment one will need to employ to alleviate his condition and knowing the different TMJ symptoms will help.

TMJ symptoms vary and some may be experienced by the patient while some are not. This varied difference of indications can be attributed to the fact that the condition is caused by a myriad of things. One of its causes can be a dental problem. Having unaligned teeth may cause your jaw to contract abnormally, causing more pressure to the jaw when it is opened and closed. Lack of overbites is another dental problem that can cause the condition.

Overusing the jaw can also cause inflammation to the joint. If one chews gum excessively, he or she may experience temporomandibular joint disease. Bruxism, the clenching of one's teeth unconsciously during his or her sleep, also stresses the jaw. Injuries to the jaw may also cause the joint to swell.

Difficulty in chewing or biting, clicking sounds when the mouth is opened or closed, earaches, headaches, migraines, hearing loss, jaw pain are all TMJ symptoms. Tinnitus is also seen as a symptom of this condition. This is the hearing of sound absent an external source.

If you think you have the syndrome, then you should see a doctor first just to make sure whether you do have it or not. A dentist can also treat the condition especially if the cause comes from a dental problem. As mentioned, being able to have this condition diagnosed early is very important as it can spell the difference between a short-term treatment and a long-term one.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome is a condition wherein the joint that connects the skull to the jaw becomes swollen. Treating it can be easy as doing morning exercises or complicated as having to go under operation. In order to avoid costly treatment, you have to recognize TMJ symptoms and catch it early on.
