Acne vulgaris can be classified as mild, moderate or severe. Severe forms of acne are rare, but can cause a great deal of problems to the person who has them. Each type of acne is different and requires a different type of treatment.

Mild and moderate acne vulgaris can be treated by following a regular cleansing routine. These tips may help:

Cleansing

Use a soapy cleanser that contains sulfur or salicylic acid. Both ingredients can help regulate the amount of sebum in the skin. Salicylic acid can penetrate the pores and unclog them from within.

Toning & Exfoliating

You should use an oil-free toner after cleansing to help remove debris that the cleansing product is not able to eliminate. However, if the cleanser is able to eliminate all the excess debris, you can skip the toner. Exfoliate once a week (more if you are in your forties).

Moisturizing

Moisturize with an oil-free, non comedogenic product. Don't skip this step or your skin will increase its production of sebum. This will elevate your chances of acne breakouts and defeat the purpose of your cleansing routine.

Acne Creams

Use an acne treatment cream that contains salicylic acid or retinol for stubborn areas. Retinol can help increase cell turnover and reduce your chances of getting acne breakouts.

Severe Acne Vulgaris

Severe acne vulgaris is characterized by the appearance of nodules or cysts. Because nodules develop underneath the skin's surface they are usually more painful than cysts.

Cysts are soft lesions similar to nodules that can lead to scarring. This type of acne lesion is usually referred to as cystic acne.

Severe Acne Treatment

If you suffer from cystic acne then you may require cystic acne treatment which involves intralesional cortisone shots to help dissolve nodules and cysts. A basic cleansing routine is also very important with this type of acne. Finding the appropriate scar treatment routine to achieve scar removal should be a priority for people who have this type of acne.
